How to Use an Acupressure Mat (and What It Actually Feels Like)

An acupressure mat looks a little intimidating — rows of small plastic points staring back at you. But the idea is simple, and once you get past the first minute, most people find it surprisingly relaxing. Here's what to expect and how to start.

What it feels like

The first 30 seconds are the most intense — a sharp, prickly sensation as your weight settles onto the points. Within a minute or two that usually softens into a warm, tingling spread as circulation picks up. Many people describe it as the feeling of finally sitting down after a long day, but for your back.

How to use it

Ease in. Wear a thin shirt the first few times if bare skin feels too much. Lower yourself onto the mat slowly rather than dropping down.

Find your spot. Lie back so the points cover your upper back and shoulders — where most of us hold desk tension. Use the bolster pillow under your neck.

Breathe and wait. Give it 10–20 minutes. Slow, steady breathing helps the sharp phase pass faster.

Try it on your feet. Standing on the mat for a few minutes is an easy way to use it while you brush your teeth.

When people reach for it

After a long day at a desk, before bed as part of a wind-down, or after a workout alongside a foam roller or massage ball. Keep it somewhere visible and you'll use it more.
